Through its 10 state-of-the-art biomass cogeneration facilities, Sierra Pacific Industries turns “wood waste” into energy to power its manufacturing operations, with some power also sold to utilities to serve homeowners and businesses. Five of of these plants are in California with one in Oregon and two in Washington. Together, these facilities produce over 180 megawatts of electrical power. That is enough power for 178,000 homes.
Bark, sawdust, and other low-grade byproducts of the sawmill manufacturing process is the primary fuel for our facilities. Wood waste from the forest is also utilized in the cogeneration process. Unmerchantable wood (small trees & branches) is selectively removed and processed to improve the remaining stand of timber in areas where trees are too dense and pose a fire danger. Clean renewable energy production and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand.
